What are you looking for?

Tutorial goal:

This is a tutorial on how to turn a photo of a person into a vector image. [Forewarning it's kinda long] This is part 1 of three. These are the basic shapes, the other will go into more detail of blending and making it more realistic. If you have any questions about how this is done or if you are having any trouble, feel free to contact me! Feedback is greatly appreciated so that I can make better tutorials for everyone! This does require a knowledge of how the pen tool works. If you'd like to learn the pen tool I suggest going here >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGiUuBNVvAI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12X7Og-4-VM

step 1

Image Used ::
http://www.dreamstime.com/beauty-green-eye-girl-portrait-imagefree1571051#download

Open the image.
I resized to max height of 1000px. You don't have to but I wanted it a bit smaller so I could show more without moving all over the place.

Create a new layer to begin your basic shapes. You may name it how you want.
I'll name mine "Face Base"

step 2

Step 1 ::
Use the eye dropper to select a base shade of the face.
I'm going to select a midtone so that it's not too hard to create higlights or shadows that blend easilly.
I'm using the forehead for this since it has the most range for the space.
Color Used - #cc937f

Step 2 ::
Select the pen tool with the settings shown.

Step 3 ::
Now we're going to start with a basic outline of her face.
I'm going to start with the easiest lines first, so I'll start just above the hand and begin my way up.
Keep in mind that this layer will be below many others, so as long as the outside edges that wont be are the way you want them, the others don't have to be perfect.
One example will be by the hair, you can go into the hair some without it being a huge factor since the hair layer will be one of the last since it will require a lot of attention.

This is what I have after my basic face outline.

A good trick for doing a shape outline this large is to set the layer's opacity to about 40% so that you can see the lines beneath what you're doing well enough to follow them like you want, since when it comes to wrapping back around you aren't guessing.
Also the arm is above her face, so the tracing doesn't have to be perfect in that area.

To end the shape either hit enter or click on the start point when the o apprears next to the cursor.

step 3

Step 1 ::

Create New Layer
I've named it "Face Shadow"

Step 2 ::
Use the dropper to select a shadowed part of the face. I used her cheek to hair line since it was a midtone shadow.
Color used :: #6e493c

Again the shapes don't have to be perfect. You want them as close as possible on none bordered edges. The hair and arm will come later so if they are in the way feel free to go over them.

I'm leaving mine at 40% so you can see the tracing. You just want to catch the obvious lines of the shadow.

step 4

Step 1 ::

Create New Layer
I've named it "Face Shadow 2"

Step 2 ::
Use the dropper again to select a midtone section of her face that is between the shadows and base color.
The higlights will have threelayers since they are harder to blend then shadows. [surprising perhaps]

Color Used :: #926451

Step 2 ::
Once you're satisfied with this step, drag shadow 2 to be beneath shadow 1.

Step 3 ::
Now we have the core of the shadows for the face. Yes it's going to look off, that's okay it's still early on.

With all the layers arranged change the opacity of each to these settings ::

Face Base [Layer 1] - 100%
Face Shadow 2 [Layer 2] - 29%
Face Shadow [Layer 3] - 23%

That should be more pleasing to the eye.

step 5

Now for the higlights of the face.

Step 1 ::
Create new group.
I've labeled mine "Face Higlights"

Step 2 ::
Select the color picker and select a bright area of midtone. I used the forehead.
Color used - #fad2c3

Again outline the obvious spaces of highlights.
I've outlined all the major highlight areas even if they are different in variation to the color I've chosen.
I've found 5 areas that have highlights I wanted to feature.
Inside the group I allowed each shape to make it's own layer.
Feel free to label these if you want to.

Step 3 ::
Set each shape for the highlights to 30%
