step 1 First we need a source file. Get out your digital and stand in front of a clearish wall. That will make it easier to cut out the background. Hold your hands up as if you were holding something, oh, and close one eye. You'll see why later. Here's what i came up with (after several dismal attempts): |
step 2 Let's start on the front image first. Take a big, hard brush, press 'Q' to enter mask mode, and 'paint' over that handsome, tough body: |
step 3 Good. Zoom in, choose a smaller, softer brush, and finish the job. |
step 4 It's easier for me because I don't have much, erm, hair. If you have lots then you'll have much more work to do. Serves you right! If you want to save time, you could always consider the possiblity of shaving it all off. Also, have you noticed that my head is almost completely round? weird. Anyhow, press 'Q' again when you're finished then SHIFT+CRTL+I to invert to selection. Now CRTL+C to copy, CRTL+N to open a new document, and finally, CRTL+V to paste: |
step 5 Let's work on that eye, I bet you're dying to know what I'm going to do with it. Open up the Liquify screen by clicking Filter->Liquify. Zoom in on the closed eye (that's the left one, by the way): |
step 6 Select the 'bloat' tool (the fourth one down on the left) and with a biggish brush 'swell' the eye. Try experimenting with brush sizes, densities and pressures to get the look of a badly bruised 'man, he's tough' eye. After you can use the foreward warp tool to more the pixels around. Select our new eye again using the same brush 'Q' method, then press CRTL+J to copy it to a new layer. Now we can do whatever we want with it. |
step 7 I have set the brush to the multiply mode and opacity to 26%. You will also notice our new layer's blending mode is now 'darken' and its opacity is down to 38%. Now paint around the eye. The places where you paint two or three times will get darker, and where you paint only once will stay lighter. This helps blend the bruising into the face.
The background. If you look on google, you'll find lots of mugshots. The backgrounds always have those measuring things on the wall. Very easy to copy. Select our eye layer and press CRTL+E to merge layers. Now we only have one. CRTL+click this layer and we have it selected. Ok, now CRTL+C to copy, and CRTL+N to open another new doc. Don't paste yet! I want to make the height a little bigger.
step 8 Right, maybe a tad too high but I'll get away with it. CRTL+V to paste our 'criminal' layer. Press 'V' and move the layer to the bottom. If it goes over the edges, just use the arrow keys to nudge into place. Now hide the layer by clicking the 'eye' that is to the left of the layer on the layer panel. I'm after something like this: |
step 9 Use the guides and rulers to get the same distance apart: |
step 10 You might need to turn off snap to position them correctly (View->Snap) |
