I think it's time for some culture. Some high-brow intellectual art. Cubism was first created by Picasso and some other guy. Years ago, apparently. Anyway, cubist paintings are kind of like all cut of and all the pieces set at different angles. Or something. And don't even think of asking me why. Oh, and they always have flowers and guitars or violins in them. Here is an example:
Right, our piece of cubist is going to be comprised of 4 elements: a wall, a wooden table, a bowl of flowers and, you guessed it, a violin. We're going to make the wall and table from scratch - yes! filters! but the flowers and violin will be images. Here they are, download them to use for this tutorial:

Adobe Photoshop 6 or higher

step 1
Let's get started. CRTL+N to open a new doc. In the width and height put 100. Isn't that a bit small, I hear some of you at the back whisper? Well yes. But this isn't going to be our image. I'm going to make tiles for the wall, so I want to create a pattern. Press CRTL+A to select everything, then click Select->Modify->Border and change the size to something like 20:

Hit SHIFT+F5 to open up the Fill screen and choose 50% gray from the drop down menu and CRTL+D to deselect:

Now for the cool bit. Click Edit->Define Pattern. Give it a name! (which was a line from which Andy Garcia movie?):

Right, with the pattern saved we can start on our image. CRTL+N again but this time make it as big as you want the finished work of art to be. I've chosen 800x600, because that's the kind of guy I am. Ok, ready for this? SHIFT+F5 and fill with 50% gray. Then go Filters->Noise->Add noise and give it about 3%. When you've done that, go Filters->Brush Strokes->Crosshatch. I love Crosshatch. Mess around with the settings, it doesn't really matter much. I put Length=11, Sharpness=2 and Strength=1. You know have something like this:

SHIFT+CRTL+N to create a new layer. Don't bother giving it a name as it's going to be merged with the other soon. Now SHIFT+F5 to open the Fill window but this time choose 'Pattern' and look for ours from the list:

Hmm. Bit of an anti-climax, isn't it? See the little F in a black circle at the bottom of the layers panel? Click it and choose 'Bevel and Emboss'. Enter these settings (or hey! choose your own)
